Assassination of Benazir Bhutto
Daughter of the East, offspring of one of the most influential political figures of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated last evening right after she was leaving her public address in Liaquat Bagh in the twin city of Rawalpindi, Islamabad.
As there is still a lot of dust that needs to settle, there is a lot of conspiracy theory talk which tried to relate this heinous crime to one faction or the other.
Here is a really good post that aggregates a lot of media links together that contains video footage and pictures of the assassination aftermath.
I am in Karachi these days, and here is my account of what the scenario was that night in Karachi.
At the press conference the Ministry of Interior claims that the death occurred due to the handle of the sun roof door hitting her on the head with full force of the blast and causing her to die.
Whatever the reason was, she is gone from this world, leaving us with a lot of questions and lesser answers. We now have a political vacuum which might now be filled by people who are not able to ‘do the job’ properly. I haven’t really gotten to grips to this heinous crime against humanity that has taken the life of a lively personality that we all saw as invincible and someone you would not want to see dead. Amongst all the gujars and waderas with the worst of personalities it is sad that we lost a charismatic, mesmerizing and a Pakistani leader to such fanaticism.
She was a fearless person, inherited by her father; whether her past regime was right or wrong in retrospect, what has happened to her should not have happened and should no happen to anyone at any stage in their life.
I am really sad for my country, we a bunch of intolerant, emotional people that do not deserve the luxury of a democratic process. What democracy exists in a country that kills each other’s leaders like this to further their ideological movements. What kind of elections do we expect with one of the most popular leader can go down so easily to terrorist attacks and assassination attempts and most of the opposition parties have boycotted them.
Stay tuned for a guest post by Asma here that aggregates a lot more information on this issue. I will try to get some good links from the Pakistani Blogosphere and the world over on this defining event.
